As the first minutes of this new year approach, I now realize that in the past days, weeks, and months I have been living in the center of a virtual construction zone. There have been dirt and dust, noise, conflict, commotion, injury, broken contracts, missed deadlines, dashed hopes, self-doubt, and always, always in the background--fear.
But as I sit alone this New Year's Eve and listen now to fireworks heralding a new year and a new beginning, I realize that the old year has ended, and its project is complete. The scaffolding and heavy equipment are gone, revealing a new view from where I now stand. The noise and hammering are now stillness, and into my heart come the words of a prophet:
"The soul that comes unto Christ dwells within a personal fortress, a veritable palace of perfect peace" (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, "Come unto Me,” Ensign, Apr. 1998, 16).As I look forward to a new year and a new beginning, I sit safe in the stillness of my new surroundings and think to myself, it is good to be home.
